Funding Advanced Search

You can conduct a detailed search for funding opportunities in the Funding Advanced Search.

In the Advanced Search you can select, enter, edit, or clear the below filters, to find funding opportunities matching your preferred parameters.

You can Include parameters as well as Exclude parameters:

In the Include Section
- You can Match all fields (AND) / Match any fields (OR) depending on how broad or narrow you would like your search results to be.
  - Match all fields (AND): In the Include Section, this will retrieve records matching ALL of your selected search criteria. This is similar to the Boolean operator AND. This is the default option and is used unless another option is selected. Example: Selecting AIDS as a Keyword, selecting Private Foundation as the Funder Type, and using 'Match all' will retrieve all funding opportunities that have the keyword AIDS from private foundations.
  - Match any fields (OR): In the include section, this will retrieve records matching ANY of your selected criteria. This is similar to the Boolean operator OR. Example: Selecting AIDS as a Keyword, selecting Private Foundation as the Funder Type, and using 'Match any' will retrieve all funding opportunities that have the keyword AIDS, as well as all funding opportunities from private foundations, whether or not they fund AIDS research.
  - Tip: If you want more precise and fewer results, select 'Match all.' If you want to cast a broader net to begin your investigation, 'Match any' will return a larger number of results.
In the Exclude Section
- You can Match all fields (AND) / Match any fields (OR) depending on how broad or narrow you would like your search results to be.
  - Match all fields (AND): In the Exclude Section, this will exclude records matching ALL of your selected search criteria. This is similar to the Boolean operator AND. Example: Selecting AIDS as a Keyword, selecting Private Foundation as the Funder Type, and using 'Match all' will exclude only funding opportunities that have both the keyword AIDS AND that are from private foundations.
  - Match any fields (OR): In the Exclude Section, this will exclude records matching ANY of your selected criteria. This is similar to the Boolean operator OR. This is the default option and is used unless another option is selected. Example: Selecting AIDS as a Keyword, selecting Private Foundation as the Funder Type, and using 'Match any' will exclude all funding opportunities that have the keyword AIDS, as well as all funding opportunities that are from private foundations (whether or not they have the keyword AIDS or not).
  - Tip: If you want exclude only results that match a combined set of filters, select 'Match all.' If you want to exclude all opportunities that include any of the filter/parameters you have selected, then choose 'Match any.'
Free Text Search: The two text boxes that appear by default enable you to conduct a free text search in a number of different fields: 'All fields', 'Abstract', 'Title', 'Funder', 'Funder ID' and 'CFDA Numbers'.
- Selecting 'All fields' will search for your terms anywhere in the funding opportunity record. Selecting Abstract, Title, Funder, etc. will only search for your terms within the specific field chosen.
- Within the free text search input field you can string together multiple terms with Boolean operators to build complex queries
- Select "+ add new row" if you would like to add additional rows of free text fields to the form
Semantic Search: The semantic search allows you to conduct contextual, natural language queries across all funding opportunities. Try searching for a field of research or enter a few sentences about the planned research you are hoping to fund. The result set will contain more funding opportunity matches that are conceptually relevant to the query.
Funder: Start typing the name of the funder you would like to see the funding opportunities of and check the box for one or more funders. Use the Free Text search section above to conduct a free text search across all funders.
Amount: The numeric Amount field can be searched to identify funding opportunities for an exact amount of funding or for more (or less) than a designated amount. To search the Amount field, first select either "More than" or "Less than" or "Between" from the Operator box. Then enter the desired amount.
- You may enter the amount as numbers without currency symbols or commas. For example, to search on the amount $12,000, entering 12000 will return the same results as entering $12,000 (if US currency is the selected currency).
- You may adjust the currency to search in USD, EUR, GBP or AUD as part of your query. The search engine will still search across all funding opportunities regardless of their native currency and will automatically convert the amounts to show all opportunities within the results that fall within the amount searched.
- Check the 'Include unspecified amounts' box to include funding opportunities that do not have an amount indicated.
Deadlines: Return relative or absolute deadlines based on the current or a specified date. You can also select to include optional or continuous/undefined deadlines. You can search for funding 'Within' or 'On or after' 14, 30, 90 or 180 days, as well as 'On or after', 'On or before' or 'Between' specified dates. Optional Deadlines are included by default, but can be deselected. Optional deadlines are any part of a submission that is not required to effectively submit a proposal. Continuous or Undefined Deadlines are those that do not have a specific date for submission and are either open or continuous or for which the funder does not provide deadline information. Click in the box to select this option.
Limited Submission: Return only funding opportunities that accept limited numbers of applications/proposals and/or funding opportunities that require some coordination at the university level prior to the funder deadline.
- Limited Submission: For some funding opportunities, funders accept only a specified number of proposals or applications from an institution. This checkbox limits your search to just those opportunities.
- Other Internal Coordination Required: Limits your search to include only funding opportunities that require some coordination at the university level prior to the funder deadline. This might be a ranking requirement, a limit on the number of times an applicant may submit, or some other special requirement by the funder.
Award Type: Return only funding opportunities matching one or more types of funding, such as Research: Project Grants & Innovation; Fellowships or Post-doctoral Awards; Scholarships, Training or Bursaries...
Keywords: The Keyword field utilizes our proprietary keywords, a large body of controlled vocabulary terms which succinctly describe the areas to which funding opportunities pertain. You can search for matching keywords. To search, begin typing in the search box. If there is a match, a list of matches from the keyword list will display below the search field. Click on the matching term that best represents the context for your topic of interest.
Applicant Type: Return only opportunities available to one or more applicant types, such as: Academic Institution; Commercial or Private Sector; Government or Public Sector...
Career Stage: Find funding opportunities available to applicants of specific career stages, such as: Early Career and Emerging in Field; Mid-Career to Established in Field; Graduate Student or Pre-doctoral...
Funder Type: Find funding opportunities from specific types of funders, such as Academic Institutions; US Federal Government; Non-US National Government; State, Province or Local Government...
Country of Funder: Return only funding opportunities available from a specified country.
Recently Added: This conducts a search for funding opportunities that have been added or renewed within the last 7, 14 or 30 days.
Applicant/Institution Location: This will limit the search to show only funding opportunities for which an applicant from the selected country is eligible to apply for. To limit your results by Applicant/Institution Locations, begin typing in the search box to find a matching location from the list of countries. Select a location of interest from the suggested list. Or, you can browse the list by clicking on the drop down arrow to to browse and select from a list of countries.
- When more than one location is selected, the Match any option will be applied to find opportunities with either location.
- Selecting Match all will only find opportunities that have all eligibility specified for all locations selected and will result in a much more limited results list.
- In addition to the locations selected, the following types of opportunities will be included by default:
  - Unrestricted: the funder has stated that the research can be conducted by a researcher based anywhere in the world without restrictions
  - Sub-entities: refers to any locations (i.e. narrower terms) that may be a part of a larger entity than the one(s) selected. (example: selecting United Kingdom will also include results for opportunities where the applicant/institution location is specified as Wales)
  - Super-entities: refers to broader locations or groups on the Applicant/Institution Location hierarchy. (example: selecting Germany will also include results where the applicant/institution location is specified as European Union)
  - Uncheck any of these options to further limit results.
Activity Location: This identifies any requirements about where the grants may be used. To limit your results by activity location(s), begin typing in the search box to find a matching location from the list of countries. Select a location of interest from the suggested list. Or, you can browse the list by clicking on the drop down arrow to view a browsable list of countries.
- When more than one location is selected, the Match any option will be applied to find opportunities that can be used at either activity location.
- Selecting Match all will only find opportunities that have all selected locations specified for the activity location and will result in a more limited results list.
- In addition to the locations selected, the following types of opportunities will be included by default:
  - Unrestricted: the funder has stated that the field does not have restrictions attached to it
  - Sub-entities: refers to any locations (i.e. narrower terms) that may be a part of a larger entity than the one(s) selected.
  - Super-entities: refers to broader locations or groups on the Activity Location hierarchy.
  - Uncheck any of these options to further limit results. You have the option to include unspecified, which indicates that there is no information provided by the funder for this field.
Citizenship: This identifies any requirements a funder has specified regarding the citizenship of the applicant.
