Research Performance Summary - Scorecard

The Scorecard is the first page of the Research Performance Summary report and provides a high-level snapshot of your institution’s research activity and impact. It includes 12 key metrics that cover publication output, citation performance, and societal impact, designed to give institutional leaders and research managers a quick, data-driven overview of performance.

Each metric is presented in a simple, easy-to-scan format to support rapid assessment and benchmarking. Where applicable, benchmarking comparisons can be enabled to highlight differences between your organization and a selected peer group, organization, or the report time period. The organization research performance summary can be filtered to a single organization or a group of organizations.

Scorecard Metrics

Publications

The total count of research publications indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection. This includes articles, reviews, conference proceedings, and other document types.

Times Cited

The total number of times publications indexed in the Web of Science have been cited by other documents within the Web of Science. Citing article counts are for all years (from 1900 to the present) and all seven citation indexes in Web of Science Core Collection.

Category Normalized Citation Impact

Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI) assesses the citation performance of a research publication by comparing it to other publications in the same field, year, and document type. It normalizes for differences in citation patterns across different disciplines, providing a more accurate and contextualized measure of impact. 
 
Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI) for the organization is the average of the CNCI values for all documents in the relevant set.

  • CNCI of 1.0 indicates an average citation rate compared to global peers
  • CNCI > 1.0 indicates above-average impact
  • CNIC < 1.0 indicates below-average

Because CNCI is an average, when looking at larger sets of publications, such as the collected works of an institution, very highly cited papers can have a large influence on the CNCI value.

Highly Cited Papers

The Highly Cited Papers indicator shows the volume of papers classified as highly cited in Essential Science Indicators (ESI).

Highly cited papers are the top one percent in each of the 22 ESI subject areas per year. They are based on the most recent 10 years of publications. Highly Cited Papers are considered indicators of scientific excellence and top performance. You can use these indicators to benchmark research performance against field baselines worldwide. Although Highly Cited Papers are synonymous with % Documents in the Top 1%, they differ in subject schema, time period, and document type.

% Publications in top 1%

Percentage of publications in a set that are in the top 1% based on citations by category, year, and document type.

How to interpret this indicator

A higher value is considered to be higher performance.

  • A percent equal to 1%: 1% of the publications in the set are in the top 1% of the world regardless of subject, year, and document type and would therefore be considered to be performing at the same level as world average.
  • A percent >1%: More than 1% of papers in the set are in the top 1% of the world.
  • A percent <1%: Less than 1% of the papers in the set are in the top 1% of the world.

% Publications in top 10%

Percentage of publications in a set that are in the top 10% based on citations by category, year, and document type.

How to interpret this indicator

A higher value is considered to be higher performance.

  • A percent equal to 10%: 10% of the publications in the set are in the top 10% of the world regardless of subject, year, and document type and would therefore be considered to be performing at the same level as world average.
  • A percent >10%: More than 10% of papers in the set are in the top 10% of the world.
  • A percent <10%: Less than 10% of the papers in the set are in the top 10% of the world.

% International collaborations

International Collaborations are defined as papers that contain one or more international co-authors.

The % International Collaborations is calculated by dividing the number of International collaborations for an entity by the total number of papers for the same entity represented as a percentage.

% Domestic collaborations

Domestic Collaborations are defined as papers with two or more authors and two or more distinct addresses and organizations with all addresses in the same country.

The % Domestic Collaborations is calculated by dividing the number of Domestic collaborations for an entity by the total number of papers for the same entity represented as a percentage.

% Industry collaborations

Industry Collaborations are defined as papers that contain two or more Organizations with at least one Organization listing its organization type as corporate or global corporate.

The % Industry Collaborations is the number of industry collaborative publications for an entity divided by the total number of documents for the same entity represented as a percentage.

Documents relevant to SDGs

Publications that have been mapped to the 2030 United Nations 17 core Sustainable Development Goals.

Non-academic collaborations

Publications co-authored by non-academics. Non-academics are defined as any co-author whose affiliation is categorized as one of the following organization types:

Organization Type Description
Health Hospitals, medical centers, and other organizations that treat or diagnose patients (e.g., Hospital Aleman)
Healthcare systems (a group of hospitals, clinics, or treatment centers) (e.g., UNICANCER)
Corporate Businesses that are a legal entity, have a board of directors, a stock symbol, and a website URL that ends in .com (e.g., Pfizer Australia)
Global Corporate: A company that operates in two or more countries (e.g., Pfizer)
Government State owned or operated organizations whose name contains Municipal or National, they report to a Ministry, State or Federal Government funded, and their website URL ends in .gov or a country code such as .de, .ca, or .ch (e.g., Ministry of Education, China)
Nonprofit Registered charities, societies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and medical research centers that are not clinical or part of an academic institute, and whose website URL ends in .org (e.g., World Wildlife Fund)
Partnership Combination of other institution types, such as Academic & Government, and international collaborations (e.g., International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA))

Documents cited in patents

Number of publications that have been cited by patents indexed in Derwent Innovations Index™ on Web of Science. This includes only publications that have been mapped to SDGs.
