The Impact page provides a deeper look into your institution’s research performance through a set of static data visualizations. These visualizations offer additional context for the metrics presented in the Scorecard, helping you better understand trends, patterns, and areas of focus.
Impact Metrics
Publications
The total count of research publications indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection. This includes articles, reviews, conference proceedings, and other document types.
Percent Open Access Publications
The percent of publications that are identified as Open Access of any type, including Gold, Bronze, and Green Open Access status. The indicator is deduplicated to account for publications that are classified under multiple Open Access types
Times Cited
The total number of times publications indexed in the Web of Science have been cited by other documents within the Web of Science. Citing article counts are for all years (from 1900 to the present) and all seven citation indexes in Web of Science Core Collection.
Category Normalized Citation Impact
Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI) assesses the citation performance of a research publication by comparing it to other publications in the same field, year, and document type. It normalizes for differences in citation patterns across different disciplines, providing a more accurate and contextualized measure of impact.
Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI) for the organization is the average of the CNCI values for all documents in the relevant set.
- CNCI of 1.0 indicates an average citation rate compared to global peers
- CNCI > 1.0 indicates above-average impact
- CNIC < 1.0 indicates below-average
Because CNCI is an average, when looking at larger sets of publications, such as the collected works of an institution, very highly cited papers can have a large influence on the CNCI value.
Percent of Publications across JIF Quartiles
The percentage of publications published in a journal in a particular Journal Impact Factor Quartile in a given time period. For example, if the visual shows 60% in Q1, it indicates that 60% of the publications in the set were published in journals ranked in Q1 (top 25%) according to their Journal Impact Factor Quartile in that time period.
The JIF value associated to the publications will correspond to the publication year.

Journal Impact Factor quartiles categorize journals within their respective subject categories, with Q1 representing the highest ranked journals and Q4 the lowest. Quartiles are determined by dividing a journal's rank in a category by the total number of journals in that category to calculate a percentile rank (Z).
- Q1: Journals ranked in the top 25% (0.0 < Z ≤ 0.25).
- Q2: Journals ranked between 25% and 50% (0.25 < Z ≤ 0.5).
- Q3: Journals ranked between 50% and 75% (0.5 < Z ≤ 0.75).
- Q4: Journals ranked in the bottom 25% (0.75 < Z).

Benchmarking Impact & Volume
This Bubble Chart helps benchmark research impact and publication volume across organizations. It visualizes three key dimensions:
- X-axis: Number of documents in the top 10%
- Y-axis: Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI)
- Bubble size: Total number of Web of Science publications – reflects overall research volume.
Ideal for comparing a university against peers or a group of universities to assess both impact and volume of research output.
Top Web of Science Research Areas
The Top Areas section on the Impact page includes two treemaps that highlight leading Web of Science research areas for your organization based on different performance indicators:
Top Areas by Number of Publications
This treemap shows the research areas where your institution has published the most. Each tile represents a Web of Science subject area, with the size of the tile indicating the volume of publications. Darker shades represent higher values within the dataset.Top Areas by Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI)
This treemap displays the research areas where your institution has achieved the highest citation impact, normalized by subject category. Here, the size and color of each tile represent relative impact—larger, darker tiles indicate higher CNCI scores.
In both visualizations, you can adjust the number of areas shown by changing the “Show Top” value at the bottom right of each chart.
Web of Science Research Areas Table
The table provides a detailed view of your institution’s research output and impact across Web of Science subject areas. For each research area, the table displays key performance metrics to help you evaluate both the volume and influence of your work.

A field-weighted citation metric that compares citation performance to global averages in the same subject area. A CNCI above 1.0 indicates above-average impact.Highly Cited Papers
The number of publications in each area that are classified as Highly Cited Papers—those in the top 1% of citations for their field and year.
The table can be sorted by any column to identify top-performing or high-volume areas. The pagination controls allow you to browse the full list of subject areas.
