Using the Research Intelligence Assistant

The Research Intelligence assistant allows you to pose questions in a natural language and get graphical and textual analysis about research performance, funding opportunities and more.

Accessing the Assistant

The Research Intelligence Assistant can be accessed in two ways:

  • From the navigation menu - Select Assistant to redirect to the Research Intelligence Assistant page.

There are 4 areas where the assistant can help you explore the content: funding, impact evaluation, collaboration analysis, and emerging topics.

You can interact with any of the Web of Science Research Intelligence guides using a unified conversational input that allows you to carry a continuous conversation across all guides from a single entry point. You can start a conversation directly from the homepage and from the Assistant section. The experience is powered by a multi‑agent workflow that understands intent, routes tasks intelligently, and preserves context across steps. You can ask about funding opportunities, analyze research impact, explore collaborations and identify emerging topics in one conversation, either by allowing the Assistant to route the question to the best matched guide or by selecting a specific guide to interact with.

Clicking on one of the 4 buttons on either the homepage or the Research Intelligence Assistant page will get you started as well.

Chatting with the Assistant

The first message you will see will give you an overview of the kinds of questions the assistant can answer (the questions will vary depending on the selected assistant):

At any point you can ask the assistant what it can and can not do.

When you ask the assistant a question, it will show a response and then answer in real-time.

The assistants recognize the organization and country you belong to and will not ask you to enter this information. You can still ask and get responses for any organization and country

Usually the answer will have these parts:

  • The search strategy - The query the system used to provide the answer, is available as a drop-down panel. You can expand to see more details. You can use this information to request changes in the search strategy in your follow-up question.
  • The answer - Can be a suggested list, an analysis of the data, a visualization of the data and more.
  • Suggestions to further explore this data, narrow down the results or change the question.

Once the answer is complete, you will have the opportunity to navigate to the respective module within Web of Science Research Intelligence to explore further (when applicable).

You can narrow down the results further by additional criteria if you so choose.

In the Impact Evaluation assistant, you have many available actions to customize the analysis and click through to custom reports or to see the underlying documents. For more information on that see here

At the end of your question, you'll see 2 actions:

  • Rerun analysis - Selecting this will ask the agent your question again. You can use this to run an old question with updated data.

  • Edit query - Will copy your query and allow you to change or add information before re-submitting it.

Selecting an historical chat, will show you the same results that were given during the chat. If you wish to see updated information for the same query, you can ask the same question and give the same clarifications in a new chat.

Previous chats remain available in your History Tab.

You can click on the More Options Menu (three vertical dots) to rename or delete a chat. The menu will open below the chat you selected:
